ABSTRACT: The present paper describes a computer-assisted wind
load evaluation system for the design of cladding of spatial
structures, using an artificial neural network (ANN) and
time-series simulation technique. First, a series of wind tunnel
experiments are carried out, and the statistics of the wind
pressures are stored in a database. Next, an ANN is constructed,
which predicts the statistics of pressure coefficients at
arbitrary points. Finally, a time series of wind pressure is
numerically simulated based on an FFT approach. The system can
be applied to a risk consistent design as well as to a fatigue
design of the cladding. Focus is on spherical domes and vaulted
roofs.
13. Wind force coefficients for designing free-standing canopy
roofs

ABSTRACT: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have been
studied experimentally. Three types of roof geometries, i.e.
gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs were tested. Wind
pressures were measured simultaneously at many points both on
the top and bottom surfaces of the roof model for various wind
directions. Based on the results for the most critical positive
and negative peak pressure coefficients irrespective of wind
direction, the wind force coefficients for the design of
cladding and its immediately supporting structures are proposed.
Correlation between the wind force and moment coefficients is
investigated, and appropriate wind force coefficients for the
design of main wind force resisting systems are proposed. Axial
forces in the columns supporting the roof are regarded as the
most important load effect. Two loading patterns causing maximum
tension and compression of columns are considered.

ABSTRACT : Waterproofing membrane used for flat roofs is
spot-fastened to the roof deck by fasteners in mechanically
attached roofing systems. Therefore, strong stresses act on the
attached parts. Furthermore, fluctuating wind pressures may
induce fatigue damage to the attached parts. In the design of
such roofing systems, it is necessary to evaluate the dynamic
effects of wind loading appropriately. Flat roofs generally have
parapets, which significantly affect the dynamic wind pressures,
particularly in the corner and edge zones of the roof. The
purpose of the present study is to investigate the
characteristics of fluctuating pressures on flat roofs with
parapets, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments and
thereby to discuss the wind pressure loading cycles for
evaluating the wind resistance of mechanically attached
single-ply roofing systems to dynamic wind loading. Focus is on
the effect of parapet height on the peak wind pressures and wind
pressure loading cycles.

SUMMARY: Wind loads for designing thin circular cylindrical
structures, such as oil-storage tanks and silos, have been
studied in a turbulent boundary layer, aiming at accumulating
information for the revision of the AIJ Recommendation for
Storage Tanks and Their Supports (1996). Wind pressure
distribution on the roof, in the case of enclosed structures,
was measured, the results of which are compared with the
specifications of the AIJ Recommendations for Loads on Buildings
(2004). The effects of open top on the pressure distributions on
the external and internal wall surfaces are also investigated.
Furthermore, the characteristics of instantaneous pressure
distributions on the external surface are discussed by using a
conditional sampling technique and the POD (Proper Orthogonal
Decomposition) analysis.

ABSTRACT : The wind pressure coefficients Cp on a pipe-framed
greenhouse (or simply ‘ pipe house ' ), whose shape consists of
two or more curvatures, have been evaluated with a 1:20 scale
model in a turbulent boundary layer. The length/width ratio of
the model was 8.3. The Cp distribution was evaluated at various
cross-sections of the model for various wind directions θfrom 0o
(normal to the ridge) to 90o (parallel to the ridge). The
evaluated Cp distribution forθ=0o was compared with the
specifications for greenhouses with gable and circular arc roofs
in the current design standard for greenhouse structures, and a
significant difference was observed. The Cp distribution changed
significantly with wind direction. The largest negative Cp value
was about -3.5 near the ridge corner whenθ=25o . The influence
of side gable openings on the external pressure coefficient Cpe
internal pressure coefficient Cpi were also investigated. It is
found that the Cpe distribution was not affected by the
openings. On the other hand, the influence of openings on the
Cpi value was significant. Whenθ=0o , the value of Cpi was as
low as -0.9, which sifted the net wind force coefficient Cf to a
positive value. The value of Cpi depended on the location of the
openings as well as on the wind direction. Whenθ=90o, the value
of Cpi varied from -0.2 in the leeward opening case to + 0.5 in
the windward opening case.
