ABSTRACT : Wind pressure coefficients for designing open-topped
oil storage tanks are investigated based on a series of wind
tunnel experiments. First, wind pressures on the external and
internal surfaces of a tank model are measured simultaneously at
many points in a turbulent boundary layer. A conditional
sampling and a POD analysis are employed. Then, the buckling
behavior of an aeroelastic model is investigated. The critical
load is compared with that for circular cylindrical shells
proposed by the authors.
3. Model of wind pressure field on circular flat roofs and its
application to load estimation

ABSTRACT : The characteristics of wind pressures acting on
circular flat roofs have been investigated based on the data
obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. A simple model of the
pressure field is provided as a function of the geometric
parameters of the building and the turbulence parameters of the
approach flow. A discussion is made regarding the application of
the pressure model to wind load estimations for the main wind
force resisting systems of circular flat roofs, using the gust
effect factor approach and the LRC method. The gust effect
factor and the equivalent static loads derived from the pressure
model are compared with those obtained from the time history of
pressures and roof responses. The results indicate that the
pressure model can be used for evaluating the wind loads in
practical design.

ABSTRACT : Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have been
studied in a wind tunnel. Three types of roof geometries, i.e.
gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs, with roof pitches between
0o and 15o, were tested. Wind pressures were measured
simultaneously at many points both on the upper and lower
surfaces of the roof model for various wind directions. The
paper describes the characteristics of the local wind pressures
with special attention to the mechanism and estimation of the
peak net pressure coefficients. Based on the results for the
most critical positive and negative peak pressure coefficients
irrespective of wind direction, the wind force coefficients for
the design of cladding and its immediately supporting structure
are proposed. The proposed values are compared with the previous
wind-tunnel results as well as with the specifications of the
Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZ) Standard (2002).

ABSTRACT : Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have been
studied in a wind tunnel. Three types of roof geometries, i.e.

from 0o to 15o, were tested. Wind pressures were measured
simultaneously at many points both on the top and bottom
surfaces of the roof model for various wind directions. The
paper describes the characteristics of overall wind forces and
moments acting on the roof with special attention to load
combination. Correlation between wind force and moment
coefficients is investigated. Wind force coefficients for the
design of main wind force resisting systems are proposed, based
on the results. For discussing the wind force coefficients, it
is assumed that the roof is rigid and supported by four corner
columns, and focus is on the axial forces induced in the columns
as the most important load effect. Two loading patterns that
cause the maximum tension and compression of columns are
considered. The proposed values are compared with the
specifications of the Australia/New Zealand Standard (2002).

ABSTRACT : Sloshing of a floating roof in an open-topped
cylindrical liquid storage tank under wind loads is investigated
analytically. Wind tunnel test in a turbulent boundary layer is
carried out to measure the wind pressure distributing over the
roof surface. The measured data for the wind pressure is then
utilized to predict the wind-induced dynamic response of the
floating roof , which is idealized herein as an isotropic
elastic plate of uniform stiffness and mass. The dynamic
interaction between the liquid and the floating roof is taken
into account exactly within the framework of linear potential
theory. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the
significant effect of wind loads on the sloshing response of the
floating roof.

? External Wind Pressure Coefficients on Enclosed Structures ?

ABSTRACT : Wind loads for designing the structural frames of
pipe-framed greenhouses have been studied based on a series of
wind-tunnel experiments with two kinds of pipe-framed greenhouse
models. The present paper focuses on enclosed greenhouses with
no openings. Wind pressure distributions on two or three typical
cross-sections were measured in a turbulent boundary layer
simulating natural winds over typical open-country exposure for
various wind directions. The measurements were made in two
different wind tunnels, which are quite different in size from
each other. The LRC (Load Response Correlation) method is
employed for estimating the design wind pressures, expressed as
equivalent static pressures, with consideration for the
time-space correlations of wind pressures. The bending moment at
the windward column base is taken into account as the most
important load effect. The results of the LRC method are
compared with those of a time-history analysis as well as with
those predicted from a conventional gust effect factor approach
from the viewpoint of load effect. It is found that the largest
load effect is induced in a frame near the windward gable wall
in an oblique wind not in a central frame in a normal wind. The
wind force coefficients for gable and circular arc roofs, which
are specified in the current standards, are not necessarily
appropriate for pipe-framed greenhouses often used in Japan .
The effects of turbulence intensity and scale on the wind
pressure distributions are also investigated.

ABSTRACT : This paper describes a computer-assisted wind load
evaluation system for the design of roof cladding of spherical
domes, using an aerodynamic database, an artificial neural
network (ANN) and a time-series simulation technique. First, a
series of wind tunnel experiments is carried out in two kinds of
turbulent boundary layers. The statistics of wind pressures,
e.g. mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis, are
computed and stored in the database, together with the
coordinates of the measuring points. The power spectrum of
pressure fluctuations is approximated by an exponential function
of the reduced frequency. The values of the parameters included
in the function are stored in the database. Next, an ANN is
constructed, which predicts the statistical values of pressure
coefficients at an arbitrary point from the information on the
dome's geometry and the turbulence intensity of approach flow.
Finally, a time series of wind pressure is numerically simulated
based on an FFT approach, in which the non-normality of pressure
fluctuations is considered. The proposed wind load evaluation
system can be applied to a risk-consistent design as well as to
a fatigue design of the roof cladding and its fixings.

SUMMARY: A lot of wind-induced damage is done to cladding and
components of buildings during typhoons. Although each of the
damage is relatively slight, the total economical loss caused by
the damage could become significant, because the damaged area
may be very wide. The features of the damage to buildings,
particularly to cladding and components, caused by recent
typhoons are described, based on the results of damage
investigations. It is found that proper design, construction and
maintenance of cladding is very important from the viewpoint of
wind-resistance of buildings.

ABSTRACT : The purpose of the present study is to develop a
nowcast system of local wind velocities near the ground using
the JMA GPV data and real-time wind measurements. In the system,
the wind velocity and direction at a reference point are first
predicted by the use of an artificial neural network, the input
data of which are the GPV data or the real-time wind data
obtained at several meteorological observatories. Then, the
predicted data are combined with the results of a wind tunnel
experiment or CFD to predict the local wind velocities near the
ground. A comparison between the predicted and actual data shows
a relatively good agreement, which implies the potential of the
proposed system..

ABSTRACT : Saroma Town in Hokkaido was subjected to a severe
disaster by an F3 tornado on November 7, 2006. Nine people were
killed and thirty-one injured. Many buildings were collapsed and
damaged. The authors conducted a questionnaire study answered by
the residents in the damaged area in order to clarify the
features of tornado and damage to buildings, lifeline facilities
and humans. Information on the restoration of the damaged area
as well as on the measures taken by administrative bodies, such
as the town office, was also obtained, which will be useful for
discussing tornado disaster reduction.

ABSTRACT: The Cabinet Office has developed “Authorized standard
of damage to houses” and recommended
quantitative evaluation on degrees of damage. However, some
problems have been pointed out on this standard as follows:
differences between the authorized results and the actual damage
to houses and difficulty in the appropriate judgment on various
kinds of damage. In this paper the authors arranged the problems
on this standard provided by the Cabinet Office and proposed a
form of a new criterion considering the application to high wind
damage.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes how to plan the emergency
operation against wind disasters such as tornadoes as well as
how to improve the response capabilities for local governments.
The authors investigated some Local Disaster Management Plans
documented by many prefectures and traced the response action of
Saga City just after the occurrence of the tornado in 2004. It
is recommended that the use of the tornado watch/warning system
by the Japan Meteorological Agency should be included in the
emergency management plan. Furthermore, key facilities which are
necessary for maintaining the response action during severe
events should be protected perfectly.

ABSTRACT: Wind force coefficients for designing open-topped oil

cylindrical shells under wind loading. Two series of wind tunnel
experiments are carried out. In the first series, simultaneous
pressure measurements both on the external and internal surfaces
of the wall are made. A conditional sampling technique and a POD
analysis are employed to understand the characteristics of
pressure field on the wall in detail. In the second series of
experiments, the buckling behavior of thin cylindrical shells
with or without roof is investigated. A special attention is
paid to the critical wind force per unit area at the windward
stagnation point causing a buckling of the shell. The buckling
load obtained from the wind tunnel experiment is compared with
those from a theoretical analysis as well as from an empirical
formula that was proposed for longer cylinders with closed top.

ABSTRACT: In the mechanically attached waterproofing systems
used for flat roofs, the waterproofing membrane is spot-fastened
to the roof deck by fasteners. Therefore, wind loads induce
strong stresses in the attached parts and may cause fatigue
damage to them. In the design of such roofing systems, it is
necessary to evaluate the dynamic effects of wind loading
appropriately. Furthermore, flat roofs generally have parapets
along the perimeter, which significantly affect the dynamic wind
pressures on the roofs. The present paper discusses the wind
pressure loading cycles for evaluating the wind resistance of
mechanically attached waterproofing systems, considering the
effects of parapet height. The wind loading cycles used in the
performance test is proposed based on a series of wind tunnel
experiments.
