SUMMARY: Previous studies of wind loads on
free-standing canopy roofs have been surveyed. Focus is
on the data obtained from wind-tunnel measurements in
simulated atmospheric boundary layers as well as from
full-scale measurements. Comparisons are made between
these studies for some aerodynamic characteristics, such
as mean and peak wind force coefficients. The wind load
provisions in the current Building Standard Law of Japan
are also compared with the experimental results. The
comparisons are restricted to the clear flow case with
no obstructions under the roof. A discussion is made of
the subjects to be investigated for making the
provisions more appropriate.

The primary purpose of this study is to provide simple
formulas for estimating the design wind loads for the
structural frames of rectangular flat roofs considering
the dynamic response to turbulent wind forces. Two types
of structural systems are considered here; that is, (i)
a series of simple beams arranged in parallel, and (ii)
a structurally integrated type, which acts like an
elastic plate, such as space truss. The characteristics
of the first modal force are investigated, using a model
of the pressure field on the roof. Based on the results,
the gust effect factors for estimating the design wind
loads are formulated as functions of the geometric and
structural parameters of the roof and the turbulence
intensity of approach flow. The formulas are verified by
comparing the results on the load effects predicted by
the formulas with those computed by using the
experimental results for the modal force. The results of
this study will be used for updating the specifications
of roof wind loads in the AIJ Recommendations for Loads
on Buildings

This report presents the outline of a building design
support system that evaluates the outdoor thermal
environment. Using this system, designers can easily
evaluate the thermal comfort of pedestrians in the
vicinity of the buildings of concern, considering
various meteorological factors, such as wind speed and
relative humidity. One feature of this system is that it
has a database of airflow around buildings in which the
results of CFD analysis for various conditions are
stored. Therefore, the designers van save time to be
used for evaluating the thermal comfort of pedestrians
because they don't need the results of wind tunnel
experiment or CFD analysis.

ABSTRACT: The observations and analyses made after the
major recent earthquakes have show that such problems
exist in joint systems of steel structure commonly used
as fracture at weld lines and permanent structural
distortion. This paper describes a new joint system
named elastic-hinge joint system by the authors. This
new joint system performs a non-linear elastic restoring
force-rotation relation and can materialize
origin-oriented frames. And, these abilities can control
damage and reduce permanent structural distortion in
structures or in structural elements after a severe
earthquake. The present simplified experiments and
numerical analyses in this paper show that this new
joint system has advantages of realization of earthquake
resistant steel structure.

The characteristics of wind pressures acting on a
circular flat roof have been investigated based on the
data obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. A simple
model of the pressure field is provided as a function of
the geometric parameters of the building as well as of
the turbulence parameters of approach flow. A discussion
is made of the application of the pressure model to the
wind load estimation based on the gust effect factor
approach and the LRC method. The gust effect factor and
the equivalent static pressure distribution derived from
the pressure model are compared with those obtained from
the time history of the pressures. The results indicate
the validity of the pressure model.

In this paper, the new structure was proposed that an
H-shaped steel column is directly embedded in a concrete
filled tubular pile. There were few investigations on
such systems that a closed sectional column embedded in
a pile directly, according to past studies. The primary
purpose of this study is to invest fundamental dynamic
performance of proposed structure and to grasp the
transferring of stress in it.
The fundamental structural performance of the proposed
system were defined that: 1) the main factor to effect
the stiffness and the bending moment at the bottom of
the column was the embedded length, and devices to
resist slipping were occasionally efficient for them. 2)
in case of specimens without adequate embedded length,
as the more thickness of pile, the more stiffness of
embedded column was obtained.
