ABSTRACT: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have
been studied in a wind tunnel. Three types of roof geometries,
i.e. gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs, with roof pitches
between 0o and 15o, were tested. Wind pressures were measured
simultaneously at many points both on the top and bottom
surfaces of the model for various wind directions. The paper
describes the characteristics of the net pressures with
special attention to the mechanism and estimation of the peak
net pressure coefficients. The effect of obstruction under the
roof on the peak net pressures is also investigated.

ABSTRACT: The characteristics of wind pressures acting on
circular flat roofs have been investigated based on the data
obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. A simple model of the
pressure field is provided as a function of the geometric
parameters of building and the turbulence parameters of
approach flow. A discussion is made of the application of the
pressure model to the wind load estimation for the main wind
force resisting systems of circular flat roofs, using the gust
effect factor approach and the LRC method. The gust effect
factor and the equivalent static loads derived from the
pressure model are compared with those obtained from the time
history of the pressures and the roof response. The results
indicate that the pressure model can be used for evaluating
the wind loads in the practical desig

ABSTRACT: The present study is focused on the structural
design of steel structures with steel foundation-girders, and
the purpose is to static seismic load taking the structures
subjected to static seismic load taking the effect of
soil-pile-structure interaction into consideration based on
Chang's formulae. It is clarified that the combined
approximations of uniform horizontal displacement with the
rotational rigidities of the junctions of column-base and
foundation-girders give accurate evaluations to the
deformations and stresses of both the structures and the pile
foundations.

ABSTRACT: This paper first introduces the background to
structural design of buildings in Japan . Then it introduces
the 2004 version of the wind load provisions of the AIJ
Recommendations for Loads on Buildings. The major revisions
are as follows: replacement of gust loading factor based on
tip displacement by one based on base bending moment;
introduction of wind directionality factor (8 wind
directions); explicit introduction of wind load combinations;
correction and addition of topographic effects; substantial
fulfillment of aerodynamic coefficients; and so on. Finally,
the 2004 version of the AIJ Guidelines for the Evaluation of
Habitability to Building Vibration is also introduced.

ABSTRACT: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have
been investigated in a simulated turbulent boundary layer.
Three types of roof geometries, i.e. gable, troughed and
mono-sloped roofs, with roof pitches between 0o and 15o, were
tested. Wind pressures were measured simultaneously at many
points both on the top and bottom surfaces of the model for
various wind directions. The local net pressure coefficients
and the overall wind force and moment coefficients were
computed by using the pressure data. The paper first describes
the characteristics of the overall wind forces and moments
acting on the roof with special attention to the load
combination for discussing the design wind loads; the axial
forces induced in the four imaginary columns at the roof
corners are considered as the load effect for discussing the
design wind loads. Then, the characteristics of the local net
pressures are investigated. A brief discussion is made of the
peak net pressure coefficients for cladding design.

ABSTRACT: The authors have proposed a new type of
greenhouse with a cross section similar to a wing. Such a
cross section reduces the wind loads and realizes a long-span
structure. Simultaneous pressure measurements were made with a
scale model in a simulated turbulent boundary layer. First,
the effects of wind speed and surface roughness of the model
on the pressure distribution were investigated; several kinds
of commercial sand paper were used for roughening the surface.
Then, the design wind load for the main force resisting
systems is discussed, based on three kinds of evaluation
methods, i.e. a time-history response analysis, the LRC method
and a gust effect factor approach. The results indicate that
the gust effect factor approach gives a reasonable result for
winds roughly normal to the ridgeline, while it results in a
wind load distribution different from those predicted by the
other two methods for oblique winds. The LRC method generally
gives a result similar to that of the time-history response
analysis. However, the result depends on the load effect under
consideration. The value of peak factor is also dependent on
the load effect; it is generally larger than 3.5. Finally, the
peak pressure coefficients for cladding design are briefly
discussed.

ABSTRACT: The characteristics of the fluctuating external
wind pressures on spherical domes have been investigated based
on the data obtained from a series of wind-tunnel measurements
in simulated atmospheric boundary layers. Focus is on the 1st
to 4th moments of probability density function as well as on
the power spectrum of pressure fluctuations. First, the
effects of the roof geometry on these factors are discussed.
Then, the dome surface is divided into two areas, i.e.
Gaussian and non-Gaussian areas, according to the values of
skewness and kurtosis. Finally, a model of the pressure field
on the dome, that is, the mean and root-mean-square
fluctuating pressure coefficients, power spectrum and so on,
is proposed as a function of the rise/span and
eaves-height/span ratios of the dome. This model is used for
simulating the fluctuating wind pressures in the Gaussian and
non-Gaussian areas. The simulated time history of pressure
fluctuations can be used for fatigue analysis and risk
consistent and more economical design.
20. Structural characteristics and wind resistant design
of spatial structures constructed in Japan

ABSTRACT: The geometry, structural characteristics and
wind resistant design method of spatial structures constructed
in Japan in the last two decades have been investigated, based
on a literature survey as well as on a questionnaire answered
by structural engineers at some construction companies.
Regarding the wind resistant design, focus is on the method of
wind load estimation used in the practical design. The results
indicate that the structural characteristics, such as the
first natural frequency and damping factor, depend not only on
the geometry of the structure but also on the structural
system. Various methods were used for estimating the design
wind load. In many cases, however, the gust effect factor
approach has been used, particularly since the AIJ
Recommendations for Loads on Buildings were revised in 1993
and the specification of gust effect factor was provided for
beams supporting flat roofs.

ABSTRACT: A new joint system named elastic-hinge joint
system by the authors is proposed. This new joint system
performs in a non-linear elastic restoring force-rotation
relation and can materialize origin-oriented frames. These
abilities can control damage and reduce permanent structural
distortion in structures or in structural elements after a
sever earthquake. This paper describes Linked-Element Method
as new analysis method for steel structure frames with this
new joint. Analysis using this new method is performed on
4-story, 3-bay steel frame with elastic-hinge joints under
linear static load. The results indicates that the performance
of steel structure frames with elastic-hinge joints under
static load can exceed that of the frames with conventional
joint systems for steel structures.
