ABSTRACT: The authors have proposed a new type of greenhouse with a cross section similar to a wing. Such a cross section reduces the wind loads significantly compared with conventional shapes and allows a long-span structure. Simultaneous pressure measurements were made with a scale model in a simulated turbulent boundary layer. Focus was on the external pressures. First, the effects of wind speed (Reynolds number) and surface roughness of the model on the pressure distribution are investigated; several kinds of commercial sand paper were used for roughening the surface. Then, the peak pressure coefficients for the design of cladding are discussed. Finally, the design wind load for the main wind-force resisting systems is discussed, using three kinds of evaluation methods, i.e. the time-history analysis, the LRC method and a gust effect factor approach. The results indicate that the gust effect factor approach provides reasonable load estimation for winds roughly normal to the ridgeline, while it results in a wind pressure distribution different from those estimated by the other two methods for oblique winds. The LRC method generally provides results similar to those of the time-history analysis. However, the pressure distribution depends on the load effect under consideration. The peak factor is also dependent on the load effect; it is generally larger than 3.5. This feature is related to the non-normality of wind pressure fluctuations acting on the surface.

ABSTRACT: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roof s have been studied experimentally. Three types of roof geometries, i.e. gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs were tested. Wind pressures were measured simultaneously at many points both on the top and bottom surfaces of the roof model for various wind directions. Based on the results for the most critical positive and negative peak pressure coefficients irrespective of wind direction, the wind force coefficients for the design of cladding and its immediately supporting structures are proposed. Correlation between the wind force and moment coefficients is investigated, and appropriate wind force coefficients for the design of main wind force resisting systems are proposed. Axial forces in the columns supporting the roof are regarded as the most important load effect. Two loading patterns causing maximum tension and compression of columns are considered.

ABSTRACT : The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of fluctuating wind pressures on flat roofs with parapets in detail, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments and thereby to discuss the wind pressure loading cycles for evaluating the wind resistance of roof cladding to dynamic wind loading. Focus is on the effects of parapet height on the fatigue-related characteristics of wind pressures.

First, the statistics of wind pressures, i.e. mean, standard deviation, maximum, minimum, skewness and kurtosis are computed and the effects of parapet height on these values are investigated. Then, fatigue characteristics of pressure fluctuations are discussed based on the distribution of load cycles over both cycle ranges and mean levels provided by rainflow count method.

 

15. Development of a Small Wind Turbine of Straight Darrieus Type with Horizontal Axis Installed on the Rooftop of Buildings

ABSTRACT: We are developing a small, efficient wind turbine, which generates electricity using the relatively strong airflow occurring near the windward edge of a flat-roofed building. The turbine has a horizontal axis and a few straight blades. Due to its positioning at the edge of a roof, this significantly reduces the downwind wind speed, a feature that results in an improvement of the wind environment on the rooftop, as well as a reduction of wind loads acting on roof cladding. A series of wind tunnel experiments is carried out using a scale model of the turbine. Firstly, the effects of airfoil and number of blades on the rotational characteristics, i.e. the startup and steady rotor speeds are investigated in smooth and grid-generated turbulent flows. Secondly, the resultant aerodynamic forces for the different airfoils are measured using a section model installed on a force balance. Finally, the wind speed distribution downwind of the rotating turbine is measured.

 

16. Wind Load Evaluation System for Cladding of Spherical Domes using Aerodynamic Database, Neural Network and Simulation

ABSTRACT: A new load evaluation system for the design of cladding of spherical domes using aerodynamic database, artificial neural network (ANN) and time-series simulation technique is proposed. First, a series of wind tunnel experiments are carried out, and a huge amount of pressure data is stored on a computer. Then, the statistics of the wind pressures, e.g. mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis are computed. After being smoothed with a cubic spline function to eliminate noises included in the experimental data, these statistical values are stored in a database, together with the coordinates of the measuring points. Next, an ANN is constructed, which predicts the statistical values of pressure coefficients at arbitrary points from the information on the dome's geometry and the turbulence intensity of the approach flow. Finally, a time series of wind pressure is numerically simulated based on an FFT approach.

ABSTRACT: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have been studied in a wind tunnel. Three types of roof geometries, i.e. gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs, with roof pitches between 0o and 15o, were tested. Wind pressures were measured simultaneously at many points both on the top and bottom surfaces of the roof model for various wind directions. The paper describes the characteristics of the local wind pressures with special attention to the mechanism and estimation of the peak net pressure coefficients. Based on the results for the most critical positive and negative peak pressure coefficients irrespective of wind direction, the peak wind force coefficients for the design of cladding and its immediately supporting structures are proposed. The proposed values are compared with the previous wind-tunnel results as well as with the specifications of Codes and Standards. The effect of obstruction under the roof on the wind force coefficients is also investigated.
