SUMMARY: Wind loads on free-standing canopy roofs have been
studied experimentally. Two series of wind tunnel experiments
were carried out. In the first series, simultaneous pressure
measurements were made for three types of roof geometries, i.e.
gable, troughed and mono-sloped, with relatively low pitches (up
to 15o). In the second series, the overall wind forces and
moments were measured for gable and troughed roofs with medium
pitches, 20 o to 30 o , using a force balance. Correlation
between the wind force and moment coefficients is investigated,
and appropriate wind force coefficients for the design of main
force resisting systems are proposed. Axial forces in the
columns supporting the roof are regarded as the most important
load effect. Two loading patterns causing the maximum tension
and compression of columns are considered. The effect of
obstruction under the roof on the wind force coefficients is
also investigated.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes a computer-assisted wind load
evaluation system for the design of cladding of spatial
structures, such as spherical domes, using artificial neural
network (ANN) and time-series simulation technique. The system
can be applied to a risk consistent design as well as to a
fatigue design of the cladding.

SUMMARY: In the previous paper (Part 2), we proposed a set of
wind force coefficients for designing free-standing canopy
roofs, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. The wind
force coefficients for three types of roof geometries, i.e.
gable, troughed and mono-sloped, were derived from a combination
of the lift and aerodynamic moment coefficients. Assuming that
four corner columns supported the roof, the axial forces induced
in the columns were regarded as the most important load effect.
The present paper investigates the validity and application of
the proposed wind force coefficients. First, the coefficients
are compared with the results of the LRC method. Then, it is
discussed if the coefficients can be applied to the other roof
supporting systems, for example, when two center or edge columns
support the roof.
