Abstract : Wind pressure coefficients for designing open-topped oil storage tanks are investigated based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. Wind pressures on the external and internal surfaces of a tank model are measured simultaneously at many points in a turbulent boundary layer. The time-space correlations of wind pressures are discussed, focusing on the characteristics of the internal pressures.

Abstract : Hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) free-roofs are often used for structures providing shade and weather protection in public spaces. However, there are few studies of the wind loads on such roofs. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the wind forces and moments acting on HP free-roofs in a wind tunnel. The overall wind forces and moments are measured by using a force balance that was designed, built and gauged for the purpose of the present study. Based on the results, wind force coefficients for the design of main wind force resisting systems are proposed.

Abstract : T he dynamic response of a floating roof in a cylindrical liquid storage tank under wind loads is investigated analytically. Wind tunnel test in a turbulent boundary layer is carried out to measure the wind pressure distributing over the roof surface. The measured data for the wind pressure is then utilized to predict the dynamic response of the floating roof, which is idealized herein as an isotropic elastic plate of uniform stiffness and mass. The dynamic interaction between the liquid and the floating roof is taken into account exactly in numerical sense within the framework of linear potential theory. The numerical results are presented, which illustrate the significant effect of wind loads on the dynamic response of liquid-floating-roof system in a storage tank.

•  Wind pressure loading cycles for evaluating the wind resistance of mechanically attached waterproofing systems on flat roofs

Abstract : Recently, mechanically attached single-ply roofing has become popular for flat-roofed buildings in Japan. The roof membrane is either welded or glued to circular disks, which are arranged in a grid pattern and mechanically fastened to the roof deck by screws. The fastener spacing ranges from 0.45 to 0.6 m, depending on the roof zone. High suctions are induced in the corner and edge zones by the generation of conical vortices in oblique winds. Fluctuating pressures may cause fatigue damage to the fixation elements. When designing such roofing systems, it is important to evaluate the dynamic effects of wind loading appropriately. Furthermore, flat roofs generally have parapets, which affect the roof pressures significantly. Many researchers have studied the effect of parapets on the peak pressure coefficients. However, few studies have been made of the effect on the fatigue-related characteristics of wind pressures so far.
The present paper first outlines a fatigue test on a mechanically attached single-ply roofing system commonly used in Japan , and then describes the characteristics of fluctuating wind pressures on flat roofs with parapets, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. A discussion is made of the wind pressure loading cycles for evaluating the wind resistance of the waterproofing system. A wind pressure loading cycle model, named ‘TS-WiLMARS' ( T ohoku University and S umitomo Bakelite ? W ind L oad Model for M echanically A ttached R oofing S ystems), is proposed.

Abstract : Wind loads on pipe-framed greenhouses can be reduced by making the sidewalls porous. Wind pressures on the external and internal surfaces of two 1:40 scale models of pipe-framed greenhouses with porous sidewalls are measured simultaneously at many points in a turbulent boundary layer simulating natural winds over typical open-country exposure for various wind directions. Wind speeds at some points inside the greenhouse are also measured. The porosity of the windward and leeward sidewalls is changed over a wide range. The wind loads represented by equivalent static wind force coefficients are evaluated by using the LRC (Load Response Correlation) method, in which the bending moment at the windward column base is taken into account as the most important load effect.

The effects of the porosity on the wind loads and responses of the frame as well as on the wind speeds inside the greenhouse are investigated. The results indicate that the porosity of 0.3 ? 0.5 can reduce the maximum bending moment by 15 to 20 percents. In such a case, the wind speed becomes approximately 40 percents of the outside wind speed.

Finally, the subjects to be investigated for applying the results of the present study to practical structures are summarized.

Abstract : In this paper, we have obtained wind force coefficients acting on a membrane roof by the wind tunnel experiment technique and a numerical analysis technique for free-standing canopy with mesh membrane, and will show one consideration on an approach of the numerical analysis to get wind pressure distributions by comparing values of the wind force coefficients that obtained with these techniques. The roof type treated in the paper is a mono-sloped roof. The mesh membrane is porous on the surface, so air of the wind can go through it. This phenomenon affects the wind force coefficients, and this point is a characteristic of mesh membrane. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect this phenomenon on the surface of a model using in the wind tunnel experiment. For the reason, a coefficient on wind pressure loss of the mesh membrane to be called the loss coefficient was actually measured by an experiment, and was reflected the roof model. Furthermore, this loss coefficient was used at the analysis. The measurement experiment to obtain this pressure loss coefficient will be introduced also.

Abstract : Wind pressures acting on the external and internal surfaces of a 1:40 scale model of pipe-framed greenhouse with porous sidewalls are measured simultaneously at many points in a turbulent boundary layer. Wind speeds at several points outside and inside the greenhouse model are also measured. The porosity of the sidewalls is changed over a wide range. The equivalent static wind force coefficients generating the maximum peak response are evaluated by using the LRC (Load Response Correlation) method, in which the bending moment developed in the frame at the windward column base is regarded as the most important load effect. The effects of porosity on the wind-induced response of the frame as well as on the wind speeds inside the greenhouse are discussed. The results indicate that the porosity of approximately 0.5 can reduce the maximum bending moment by approximately 20 percent without a significant increase in wind speed inside the greenhouse.

Abstract : The present paper discusses the wind force coefficients for designing the main wind force resisting system of a hyperbolic paraboloid (H.P.) free roof, based on a wind tunnel experiment. In the experiment, the lift coefficient (C L ) and the aerodynamic moment coefficients ( C Mx and C My ) about two horizontal axes ( x and y ) were measured by using a force balance that had been designed, built and gauged for the purpose of the present study. Correlations between wind force and moment coefficients are investigated, and appropriate wind force coefficients for the design of main wind force resisting systems are proposed for two wind directions perpendicular to each other. The roof is assumed rigid and simply supported by four corner columns, whose axial forces are regarded as the most important load effect for discussing the design wind loads. Two load cases generating the maximum tension and compression of columns are considered. The roof is divided into the windward and leeward halves for each wind direction, and the wind force coefficients on these halves are provided. The proposed values are compared with the specifications of the Australia/New Zealand Standard from the viewpoint of load effect.

AN ELASTIC-HINGE JOINT SYSTEM

ABSTRACT: A new joint system named ‘elastic-hinge joint system' is proposed. This system shows a non-linear elastic restoring force-rotation relation and can realize origin-oriented frames. These properties can control damage and reduce permanent distortion in structures or in structural elements after a severe earthquake. This paper describes experimental results on a beam-column connection to which this joint system is applied. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the separation and rotation behavior of the elastic hinge joint. Based on the results, a theoretical model of this joint system is proposed.

Abstract : The present paper proposes the external wind pressure coefficients for designing the main wind force resisting systems of pipe-framed greenhouses widely used in Japan, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. Simultaneous pressure measurements are made with a 1:40 scale model of the greenhouse in a turbulent boundary layer simulating the natural winds over typical open-country exposure. The distribution of the equivalent static pressure coefficients generating the maximum load effect on the frame are computed by using the LRC (Load Response Correlation) method; the bending moment at the windward column base is taken as the most critical load effect in the analysis. First, a model of the external wind pressure coefficient is provided for the isolated model. Then, the effect of adjacent structures on the pressure distribution is investigated using two or three identical models arranged in parallel. The results indicate that the proposed model of external wind pressure coefficients can be applied reasonably to the plural model cases.
