•  WIND TUNNEL STUDY OF THE INTERACTION OF TWO OR THREE SIDE BY SIDE PIPE FRAMED GREENHOUSES ON WIND PRESSURE COEFFICIENTS

Abstract : More than two identical pipe‐framed greenhouses (referred to as “pipe houses” hereafter) are often arranged in parallel. The wind pressure distributions on the pipe houses are significantly affected by the distance dp between them. This article investigates the effect of dp on the distribution of wind pressure coefficients Cp on two or three pipe houses arranged in parallel, based on a wind tunnel experiment using 1:20 scale models of a typical pipe house. Focus was on a wind direction perpendicular to the ridgeline. The distance dp varied from 0.25H to 6H, with H being the ridge height of the pipe house. The results indicate that the Cp distribution on the windward side of the first pipe house was similar to that for an isolated pipe house, while the Cp values on the roof and leeward wall were dependent on dp. On the other hand, the Cp values on the second and third pipe houses were generally negative and significantly affected by dp, in particular on the windward wall and roof. Very high suctions were induced on the leeward roof of the second pipe house near the ridge when the distance dp was small. The suctions may be induced by the second separation of the reattached flow on the windward roof at the location of the ridge. The local drag and lift coefficients, CD and CL, on the central cross‐section were also computed from the Cp distribution. The influence of the adjacent pipe houses on the CD was significant, while the CL was less sensitive to dp.

ABSTRACT :  The present paper discusses the design wind loads on cylindrical storage tanks, such as oil-storage tanks, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments together with a theoretical analysis of wind-induced buckling. Focus is on open-topped tanks; the effects of roof on the wind forces as well as on the buckling behavior are investigated. In the wind tunnel experiments, the wind pressures are first measured at many points both on the external and internal surfaces of rigid models in a turbulent boundary layer. Then, the pre-buckling and buckling behavior of thin cylindrical shells is measured in smooth and turbulent flows. A discussion is made of the dynamic load effects of wind pressures on the buckling behavior. A theoretical analysis of the buckling under static wind loading is conducted based on Donnell Theory. The effect of wind force distribution on the buckling behavior is investigated. The results indicate that the wind force distribution on the windward surface affects the buckling behavior significantly.

ABSTRACT :  In current design practice, the responses of buildings and structures to fluctuating wind loads are usually separated into the background and resonant components, based on the assumption that these two components are not correlated with each other. The present paper proposes a new model for estimating the wind-induced responses of tall buildings, in which the background and resonant components and their cross-term are strictly defined and included. Therefore, the new model is more exact than the conventional ones. Comparisons are made for the along-wind and across-wind responses of tall buildings between this model and the conventional ones, based on a parametric investigation. The results show that the conventional models give results similar to those obtained from the new model for the along-wind responses, but generally underestimate the across-wind responses. Finally, some conclusions and useful suggestions are presented.

ABSTRACT :  The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the wind force coefficients of a hyperbolic paraboloid (called ‘HP', hereinafter) free roof for the design of membrane strictures, based on a wind tunnel experiment 1) as well as on a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. We investigate the validity of analytical approach 2) to obtain the design wind force coefficients. In the present paper, the lift coefficient ( C L ) and the aerodynamic moment coefficients ( C Mx and C My ) about two axes ( x and y ) are obtained. Correlation between the wind force and moment coefficients are investigated, and appropriate wind force coefficients are proposed for two wind direction perpendicular to each other. In the discussion of the design wind force coefficients, the roof is assumed rigid and simply supported by four corner columns, and the axial forces induced in the columns are regarded as the most important load effect for estimating the design wind loads. Two load cases generating the maximum tension and compression of columns are considered. The roof is divided into the windward and leeward halves for each wind direction, and the wind force coefficients on these halves are provided. Finally, the proposed values are compared with the specifications of the Australia/New Zealand Standard 3) from the viewpoint of load effect. A comparison of the results on the wind force and moment coefficients between wind tunnel experiment and CFD analysis indicates a potentiality of the CFD analysis for evaluating the wind forces on HP free roofs with various shapes, although some improvements should be made.

ABSTRACT :  The Building Standard Law of Japan and Recommendations for Loads on Buildings have no design pressure and force coefficients for hip roofs and eaves. In order to investigate these pressure and force coefficients for low-rise buildings (dwelling house), a series of boundary layer wind tunnel tests was executed by six organizations as a part of the committee activity consigned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In the series of wind tunnel tests, wind pressures on gable roofs and hip roofs were evaluated with four roof-angles and two overhanging depths of eaves, including cases without eaves and flat roofs. As the test results, the peak pressure coefficients of roof surface and peak force coefficients of eaves/peak pressure coefficients of back eaves for facade design were mainly discussed in this paper.

ABSTRACT Pipe-framed greenhouses are often subjected to wind-induced damage. This may be due to a fact that the wind force coefficients for designing such greenhouses are not specified in codes and standards. The present paper first shows some typical wind-induced damage to greenhouses. Then, a discussion is made of the external pressure coefficients for designing the structural frames and cladding/components of pipe-framed greenhouses, based on a wind tunnel experiment. For discussing the wind pressure coefficients for the structural frames, focus is on the bending moment at the windward column base as the most important load effect. The LRC method is employed. A model of the wind pressure coefficient distribution is proposed. On the other hand, focus is on the area-averaged peak wind pressures, when discussing the design wind pressures for cladding/components

ABSTRACT A model for evaluating the equivalent static wind loads (ESWLs) on base-isolated buildings under fluctuating wind loads is proposed in the frequency domain, with an assumption that the response of the isolators (isolation elements) is within the pre-yielding (linear) range. The natural period and damping of such buildings are discussed based on some parametric investigations. This model conveniently adopts the wind spectra for conventional tall buildings obtained from codes or wind tunnel experiments to evaluate exactly the ESWLs on base-isolated buildings. Finally, some numerical examples are presented for the along-wind and across-wind ESWLs on a tall base-isolated building.

ABSTRACT In the previous study, the authors proposed a novel beam-column joint system, or an elastic hinge joint system. This joint system exhibits a self-centering behavior; that is, it has a nonlinear hysteresis character of force-rotation restoration. Steel structural frames with such a joint system can be used to control the structural damage as well as to reduce the residual strain after severe earthquakes. The objective of the resent study is to investigate the response of steel structural frame with the proposed elastic hinge joint system to earthquakes, based on a substructure pseudo-dynamic test. The results show a nonlinear elastic hysteresis character of the relation between moment and rotation angle at the joint, as a theoretical model predicts. The maximum shear force and acceleration at each story of the structure induced by earthquakes are both reduced by such a behavior of the joint system.
