ABSTRACT: The present study investigates the internal wind pressure coefficients for designing pipe-framed greenhouses commonly used in Japan. In our previous study1), we discussed the external wind pressure coefficients, based on a series of wind tunnel experiments as well as on a structural analysis of the frame subjected to wind loading. Focus was on the bending moment at the column base as the most important load effect for discussing the design wind loads. We proposed a model of the external pressure coefficient, expressed as the equivalent static load, which provides the maximum load effect. The net wind forces acting on the greenhouses are provided by the difference between the external and internal pressures. In the present paper, therefore, a discussion is made of the internal pressure coefficient to be combined with the external pressure coefficient in the structural design. The internal pressure coefficient is numerically simulated by using the time history of external pressure coefficients simultaneously measured at many points along the small gaps existing in the gable and side walls. Not only an isolated model but also two or three identical models arranged in parallel are tested (see Fig. 1). The effects of wind direction and gap between models on the internal pressure coefficient are investigated. Furthermore, the correlation between the external and internal pressures is investigated from the viewpoint of load effect. Based on the results, we propose the internal pressure coefficient for designing the pipe-framed greenhouses.

ABSTRACT: Open-topped oil-storage tanks are generally composed of very thin circular shell. Therefore, the buckling under wind loading is one of the most important technological problems. In our previous study (Yasunaga 2011), the design wind loads on isolated open-topped oil storage tanks was investigated based on a pressure measurement in a wind tunnel as well as on a buckling analysis. The results indicate that the positive wind force distribution in the windward region affects the buckling behavior significantly. In practice, more than two tanks are constructed in various arrangements. In such cases, the positive wind force distribution in the windward region may be different from that of isolated tanks. In the present study, wind tunnel experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of model arrangement on the pressure distribution (Fig. 1). The wind pressures are measured at many points both on the external and internal surfaces in a turbulent boundary layer in various arrangements (Fig. 2).

ABSTRACT: The present paper discusses the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on long-span vaulted roofs, based on a wind tunnel experiment and a CFD simulation. A forced vibration test is carried out in the wind tunnel to investigate the effects of wind speed, vibration amplitude, reduced frequency and rise/span ratio of the roof on the unsteady aerodynamic forces. Furthermore, the influence of the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the dynamic response of practical long-span vaulted roofs is investigated using the results obtained from the wind tunnel experiments. The CFD simulation is used effectively to evaluate the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the vibrating roof in a wider reduced frequency range.

ABSTRACT: A joint system named ‘elastic-hinge joint system’ can provide non-liner elastic restoring force characteristics to the beam-to-column connections as well as to the column bass individually, resulting in origin-oriented frames. However, when this joint is applied to the perimeter column bases that are subjected to fluctuating axial forces during earthquakes, the separation and rotation behavior of the joint may change from the desired behavior. To overcome these problems, the eccentric type elastic-hinge joint system is proposed. From a small scale static test, it is found that the eccentric type elastic-hinge joint system shows an asymmetric hysteresis. A series of dynamic analyses are conducted with 5-story MRFs, aiming at understanding the effect of eccentricity on the response of the Eccentric type bases. The analytical results show that the conventional type cannot fulfill the design criteria for extremely strong earthquakes because of the early or late detachment of the column bases. When the Eccentric-type column bases are used, on the other hand, the detachment moment becomes almost constant despite the fluctuating axial forces during the extremely large earthquakes and the design criteria are satisfied.

1.    Wind Force Coefficients for Designing Porous Ree-Standing Canopy Roofs

ABSTRACT: Design wind force coefficients for porous canopy roofs have been investigated based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. Three types of roof geometries, i.e. gable, troughed and monosloped roofs were tested. The roof models were made of 0.5 mm thick perforated duralumin plates, the porosity of which was changed from 0 (solid) to 36%. Overall aerodynamic force and moment coefficients were measured in a turbulent boundary layer with a six-component force balance for various wind directions. The results indicate that the wind loads on canopy roofs generally decrease with an increase in porosity, or a decrease in pressure loss coefficient of the roof. Assuming that the roof is rigid and supported by the four corner columns with no walls, the axial forces induced in the columns are regarded as the most important load effect for discussing the design wind loads. Two loading patterns causing the maximum tension and compression are considered. Based on a combination of the lift and moment coefficients, the design wind force coefficients on the windward and leeward halves of the roof are presented as a function of the roof pitch and porosity for each roof geometry and loading pattern. The effect of porosity is taken into account as a reduction factor of the wind loads.

ABSTRACT: Wind force coefficients for designing open-topped oil storage tanks are investigated based on a series of wind tunnel experiments. Focus on is the interference between two or three tanks arranged in a line at various gap spacings. In the wind tunnel experiments, the wind pressures are measured at many points simultaneously both on the external and internal surfaces of rigid models in a turbulent boundary layer. The results indicate that the distributions of external wind pressure coefficients and the magnitude of internal wind pressure coefficient are affected by the arrangement significantly. As the gap spacing is decreased, the area of positive wind pressure in the windward region becomes larger. These results suggest that the arrangement of open-topped oil storage tanks affects the buckling behavior of tanks significantly.

ABSTRACT: The cladding and components of high-rise buildings are always exposed to dynamic wind forces. The wind forces are characterized by a long duration compared with seismic forces.  For example, during a strong typhoon, strong wind lasts for a couple of hours. The structural frames of high-rise buildings are usually so designed that the stresses involved in the structural members are almost in the elastic range for the design wind load with a return period of 500 years. On the other hand, in many cases, the cladding and components are designed based on the short-term allowable stress for the design wind load with a return period of 50 years. Therefore, they may be damaged by fatigue during the building’s lifetime.  In this study, the characteristics of fatigue accumulation in the cladding and components of high-rise building are investigated based on the results of a wind tunnel measurement of fluctuating wind pressures in a turbulent boundary layer with a 1:1:4 square cylinder model.

ABSTRACT: The value of load resistance (LR) and design load (DL) for glass design specified in the current Japanese design standards were examined in light of those values calculated based on static fatigue theory, which governs the failure mechanism of glass. LR was calculated using numerical simulation validated with full-scale glass breakage tests and was compared with the value specified by Notification No. 1458 of the Ministry of Construction. By creating a particular wind pressure time history, DL was obtained as an equivalent static load for a specific design situation and was compared with loads specified in Recommendations for Loads on Buildings by the Architectural Institute of Japan.
