Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 130(2014) pp. 16-29, 2014.4

abstractWind force coefficients for designing open-topped oil storage tanks have been investigated both experimentally and analytically.  First, simultaneous pressure measurements were carried out at many points both on the outside and inside of the wall of a rigid model in a turbulent boundary layer.  A conditional sampling of pressures was made for investigating the pressure distribution at an instant when the external pressure at a reference point, roughly corresponding to the windward stagnation point, became the maximum peak value.  The instantaneous distribution of wind force coefficients, or the pressure difference coefficients at this moment was found to be similar to that of the mean wind force coefficients.   Then, the buckling behavior of thin cylindrical shells was investigated based on a wind tunnel experiment with elastic cylinders.  Furthermore, a finite element analysis of the buckling behavior under static wind loading was carried out.  The results indicate that the buckling behavior is mainly affected by the magnitude and extent of positive wind force coefficient on the windward area of the cylinder.  Finally, a discussion is made of the wind force coefficients to be used for the design of open-topped oil storage tanks, based on the above-mentioned wind tunnel experiments and finite element analysis.

CWE2014, 6th International Symposium on Computational Wind Engineering, Hamburg, Germany, 8-12 June. 2014

abstractThe present paper discusses the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on a long-span curved roof by using LES (Large Eddy Simulation). A forced vibration test in a turbulent boundary layer is simulated to investigate the influences of roof’s vibration on the wind pressure and flow field. It is found that the LES can be used effectively to evaluate the unsteady aerodynamic forces on a vibrating roof in a wider range of reduced frequency of vibration compared with the wind tunnel experiment.

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 132(2014), pp.77-91, 2014.7

abstractThis paper examines peak external wind pressures acting on walls of low-rise buildings using various parameters.  Results indicate that positive pressure distribution is relatively uniform regardless of parameters considered and its magnitude decreases as averaging area size becomes larger.  Large suction pressure distribution occurs at lateral edges of walls and its magnitude does not average out with increasing averaging area size as rapidly as for positive pressure.  Based on these observations, we find that zoning of wall area for design purposes is only necessary for wall suction pressures.  We further find that it is more suitable to base zoning on building height to some extent.  When the present results are compared with the design values in the AIJ Recommendations for Loads and Buildings in Japan, the design values significantly underestimate positive wall pressures for small averaging areas, but the degree of underestimation diminishes as area becomes larger.  Similarly, design values underestimate negative wall pressures up to an area of 10 m2, but begin to overestimate past that point.  A similar observation was made for a comparison with ASCE7-10; however, the degree of overestimation of negative code values at larger areas was smaller than the one observed in the comparison with the AIJ Recommendations.

The 2014 World Congress on Advances in Civil, Environmental, and Materials Research (ACEM14), Busan, Korea, August 24-28, 2014

ABSTRACTWhen severe wind events occur, failure of window glass can be observed quite frequently. Although the main cause of this failure is believed to be wind-borne debris, failure due to wind pressure is also relatively common and numerous studies were performed on estimating window glass plate strength under wind loading. With respect to the estimation of glass strength, a proper determination of initial glass strength, which is the strength before glass is loaded, is important and the weathering effect is known to affect the initial glass strength.  Regardless its importance, few studies have previously been conducted on the weathering effect because a large number of in-service glass plates necessary to obtain statistically significant results can seldom be obtained in practice. However, due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, some buildings in the Faculty of Engineering, Tohoku University were severely damaged and a decision was made that they should be demolished and rebuilt. This allowed us to obtain a large number of in-service window glass plates from one of the buildings before it was demolished.  A coaxial double ring test was performed both on in-service glass plates from the destroyed building and on new plates. Thereby, the reduction of glass strength due to weathering effect was evaluated. By treating the obtained breakage strength as initial glass strength, glass strength was calculated by performing glass strength modeling, which considered the unique characteristic of glass plates (i.e., static fatigue).   Finally, a fragility analysis was performed using the obtained wind load resistance in order to observe the weathering effect on wind speeds in design situations.

The 2014 World Congress on Advances in Civil, Environmental, and Materials Research (ACEM14), Busan, Korea, August 24-28, 2014

ABSTRACTStrength and failure characteristics of elastically-supported glass plates are examined by performing full-scale breakage tests and numerical simulation which can predict glass failure pressure. In full-scale breakage tests, three types of wind loading were applied to the specimens, including dynamic loading created based on wind tunnel measurement, up to plate failure. The results are consistent with the assumption that the damage accumulation of glass is independent of loading patterns. In addition, the numerical simulation, which was originally developed for simply-supported glass plates, was modified so that it can be applicable to glass plates elastically supported. The effects of several input parameters for the numerical simulation on the calculate failure pressure were investigated in order to choose the best combination of these parameters for closely replicating the full-scale breakage test results.

The 2014 World Congress on Advances in Civil, Environmental, and Materials Research (ACEM14), Busan, Korea, August 24-28, 2014

ABSTRACTWind force coefficients for designing open-type framed membrane structuresareproposed based on a wind tunnel experiment. Two cases of gable-wall opening are investigated; only one gable wall is open in a case, while both gable walls are open in the other case. For a comparative purpose, a closed-type model is also tested. Wind pressures are measuredsimultaneously at many points both on the external and internal surfaces of the model in a turbulent boundary layer. For discussing the design wind loads on the main wind force resisting systems, focus is on the bending moment involved in the windward column as the load effect. Furthermore, the peak wind force coefficients for cladding designare specified based on the distributions of the most critical positive and negative peak wind force coefficients irrespective of wind direction.

7th International Symposium on Environmental Effects on Buildings and People (EEBP7), Crakow, Poland, October, 20-22, 2014

Abstract: The present paper discusses the mechanism of wind-induced scattering of permeable unit flooring decks loosely laid on the rooftop and balconies of high-rise buildings. First, the scattering mechanism of decks is investigated, based on a blowing test us-ing a blower and actual decks. Then, a simulation model is constructed for estimating the internal pressures under the decks (pressure acting on the bottom surface of decks), based on the unsteady Bernoulli equation and the time history of external pressures on the rooftop and balconies, obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. Combining the simulated internal pressures and the experimentally obtained external pressures, the time history of net wind forces acting on the decks is computed. The threshold wind speed of scatter-ing (scattering wind speed) is obtained by applying the scattering mechanism to the simulated time history of the net wind forces.

7th International Symposium on Environmental Effects on Buildings and People (EEBP7), Crakow, Poland, October, 20-22, 2014

Abstract: In the wind-resistant design of low-rise buildings, it is important to evaluate the wind loads accurately, both on the structural frames and on the cladding/components. For this purpose, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural winds near the ground surface in detail. The present study develops a quantitative estimation method for evaluating the turbulence of winds near the ground surface on the basis of field measurements at various points all over Japan. The characteristics of surface roughness are evaluated on the basis of several factors obtained from a building information database. The relationship between these factors and the turbulence of winds is discussed. The effect of observation height above the ground surface on the turbulence is also investigated.

Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Volume 8, No. 10 (Serial No. 83), pp. 1233-1242, 2014.10

Abstract: Wind loading on an H.P. (hyperbolic paraboloid) free roof has been investigated on the basis of a wind tunnel experiment.  The roof models of 1 mm thickness were made of nylon resin using laser lithography. The parameters under consideration are the rise to span ratio and slope of the roof. The overall aerodynamic forces and moments were measured by a six-component force balance in a turbulent boundary layer.  Based on a  combination of the lift and moment coefficients, the design wind force coefficients, CNW * and CNL *, on the windward and leeward halves of the roof are proposed. Focus is on the column axial forces induced by wind loading as the load effect for discussing the design wind loads, assuming that the roof is rigid and supported by four corner columns. Indeed, two pairs of CNW * and CNL *, generating the maximum tension and compression in the columns, are provided for each of the two or three wind directions parallel to the roof’s diagonal lines. The proposed values of the wind force coefficients are compared with the specified values in the Australia/New-Zealand Standard for a limited range of rise to span ratio.

Sustainable Solutions in Structural Engineering and Construction, pp.333-338, 2014, 2014.10

Abstract: Wind force coefficients for designing open-topped oil-storage tanks in various arrangements have been investigated under experiments involving a wind tunnel and a buckling analysis of the tanks. In the wind tunnel experiment, the wind pressures were measured simultaneously at many points both on the external and internal surfaces of a rigid model for various arrangements of two to four tanks. The effects of arrangement and gap spacing of tanks on the pressure distribution are investigated. The buckling of tanks under static wind loading is analyzed by using a non-linear finite element method. A discussion of the effect of wind force distribution on the buckling behavior follows. The authors provided a model of circumferential distribution of wind force coefficient on isolated open-topped tanks in their previous paper. This paper proposes a model of wind-force coefficient for plural tanks in various configurations by modifying the model for isolated tanks.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to promote tornado disaster countermeasures for local governments. The actions that local governments have to take after a tornado disaster are arranged. These results are based on the interview given to the officials of the local government that received a tornado disaster, and are classified into four categories based on the disaster phases; that is, prevention, mitigation and preparedness, emergency response, and recovery and rehabilitation. Furthermore, the results are compared with the tornado countermeasures specified in the Saga City Local Disaster Management Plan. It is hoped to specify tornado disaster countermeasures in the Local Disaster Management Plan of the other local governments.

ABSTRACT: The characteristics of peak external wind pressures acting on walls of low-rise building were examined by using wind tunnel test results performed on models with various roof slopes and eave heights. On one hand, pressure distribution of positive wind pressure is found to be relatively uniform; and hence zoning seems unnecessary. On the other hand, large suctions are observed at the lateral edges of walls, which results in the necessity of zoning. Strong non-Gaussian characteristics are found not only for negative wind pressures but also for positive wind pressures and the probability density does not necessarily become Gaussian when aggregated loads are considered. Comparisons with the specified values in the AIJ Recommendations for Loads and Buildings in Japan were also performed.

Yuki TAKADATE, Yasushi UEMATSU, Eri GAVANSKI

The 23th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 259-264, 2014.12

ABSTRACT: Wind force coefficients on semi-open type structures are proposed on the basis of the result of a wind tunnel experiment. Two types of gable-wall opening are investigated; only one gable wall is open in a case, while both gable walls are open in the other case. Closed-type model is also tested for a comparative purpose. The wind pressures are simultaneously measured at many points both on the external and internal surfaces of the model in a turbulent boundary layer. When discussing the wind force coefficients, focus is on the bending moment at the windward knee of the frame for the pinned-base frame and at the windward base for the fixed-base frame. Based on the result for the most critical condition, we propose the wind force coefficients for the main wind force resisting systems by using the LRC method, which can be used in the frame of conventional gust effect factor approach.

ABSTRACT: In this study, we reproduced the results of the wind tunnel experiments on a greenhouse with wing-like cross-section (Uematsu 2004) by CFD. We examined the appropriate analytical conditions for the boundary layer turbulence and compared the results with the experimental ones. From the comparison we confirmed the validity of the analytical model. Based on the results of a parametric study in which the heights of windward and leeward walls, curvature of the roof etc. were changed over a wide range. We propose on optimum cross section on of the wing-shaped greenhouse. This cross-section reduces the drag force significantly compared with the conventional ones.

ABSTRACT: Permeable materials such as louver and punching metal are used as an outer skin attached to the outside of building walls. However, the wind loads acting on such a permeable material have not been clarified. In the present study, a wind tunnel test is performed to investigate the wind loads on permeable panels attached along the perimeter of the rooftop of a high-rise building. The permeable outer skin is modeled by a thin metal plate with rectangular holes.  The porosity and size of the openings are changed in the test. The effects of those parameters on the wind loads acting on the outer skin are understood through the test.

FATIGUE DAMAGE EVALUATION OF CLADDING AND COMPONENTS OF HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC WIND FORCES

Hiroshi TERAZAKI, Yasushi UEMATSU

The 23th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 397-402, 2014.12

ABSTRACT: The cladding and components of high-rise buildings are always exposed to dynamic wind forces. The wind forces are characterized by a long duration compared with seismic forces.  For example, during a strong typhoon, strong wind lasts for a couple of hours. The structural frames of high-rise buildings are usually designed so that the stresses involved in the structural members are almost in the elastic range for the design wind load with a return period of 500 years. On the other hand, in many cases, the cladding and components are designed based on the short-term allowable stress for the design wind load with a return period of 50 years. Therefore, they may be damaged by fatigue during the building’s lifetime.  In the present paper, the characteristics of fatigue accumulation in the cladding and components of high-rise buildings are investigated based on the results of a wind tunnel test and the observation data about 50 years at 14 meteorological observatories in Japan.

In order to understand the failure mechanism of wall systems in detail, full-scale experiments have been conducted using wall specimens with metal sidings assembled in the same way as actual walls. Two types of loadings, i.e., step-up loading and realistic wind loading generated from wind tunnel data, have been employed. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in wall capacity obtained from different loadings, although failure mode progressions of the wall systems under different loading types exhibit a clear difference.

The 23th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 409-414, 2014.12

ABSTRACT: The present paper investigates the buckling behavior of open-topped oil-storage tanks based on a finite element analysis. The distribution of wind force coefficients on two or three tank models in various arrangements, together with an isolated model, are measured in a wind tunnel. The results on the mean wind force coefficients are used for the buckling analysis.  First, the fundamental characteristics of buckling behavior are discussed with isolated models. Then, the effects of flexural rigidity of wind girder at the top of the tank on the buckling load and mode of tank shells are investigated. Finally, the effect of wind force distribution on the buckling load is discussed. The results indicate that the distribution of positive wind force coefficients in the windward area affects the buckling behavior significantly.  The buckling load decreases significantly for some arrangements.

Abstract: The present paper discusses the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on long-span curved roofs. A forced vibration test is carried out in a wind tunnel to investigate the effects of wind speed, vibration amplitude, reduced frequency of vibration and rise/span ratio of the roof on the unsteady aerodynamic forces. Because the range of parameters tested in the wind tunnel experiment is limited, a CFD simulation is also made for evaluating the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on the vibrating roof over a wider range of parameters. Special attention is paid to the effect of reduced frequency of vibration.  Based on the results of the wind tunnel experiment and CFD simulation, the influence of the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the dynamic response of a full-scale long-span curved roof is investigated on the basis of the spectral analysis.

Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering, Transactions AIJ, Vol.80 No.708, pp.207-217, 2015.2

Abstract: The present paper discusses the characteristics of wind forces acting on the external wall binders of a high-rise building based on the results of a wind tunnel experiment from the viewpoint of fatigue damage. Special attention is paid to the binders connecting the external curtain walls and the structural frames. A wind force direction conversion factor for the relation between wind force and member stress is introduced into the fatigue evaluation together with the normalization of stresses. Furthermore, a discussion is also made of the influence of mean stress on the fatigue damage, which depends on the wind direction and speed.

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 138(2015) pp. 77-86, 2015.3

Abstract: The present article proposes a model of wind force coefficient for designing open-topped storage tanks in various arrangements; main focus is on oil storage tanks.  In our previous paper, we discussed the design  wind force coefficients for isolated tanks, based on wind tunnel experiments of wind pressure distributions and buckling as well as on a finite element analysis of buckling under static wind loading.  In practice, however, more than two tanks are constructed in various arrangements in a site.  In such cases, the wind force distribution and the resultant buckling behavior of tanks may be affected by the arrangement significantly.  Therefore, the present article focuses on the grouping effect on the wind force distribution and the buckling behavior.  First, the wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points both on the external and internal surfaces of a rigid model for various arrangements of two to four tanks in a turbulent boundary layer.  The effects of arrangement pattern and gap spacing of tanks on the pressure distributions are discussed.  Then, the buckling of tanks under static wind loading for various arrangements is analyzed by using a non-linear finite element method.  The results indicate that the distribution of positive wind force coefficient in the windward area affects the buckling behavior significantly.  Finally, based on the results obtained, we propose a model of wind force coefficient on tanks in various arrangements by modifying the model for isolated tanks that we proposed in our previous paper.  For evaluating the design wind loads a gust effect factor approach is employed.  The wind load evaluation is based on the quasi-steady principle and therefore the resonant effect is not taken into account.
