abstract:A
discussion is made of the wind force coefficients for
designing the main wind force resisting systems of H.P.
(Hyperbolic-Paraboid)-shaped porous canopy roofs on
the basis of a wind tunnel experiment. Roof models with a
number of small circular holes were made of nylon resin using
laser lithography. The porosity was changed from 0 (solid) to
0.4. Besides the porosity, the geometric parameters of the
models were the rise to span ratio and slope of the roof. The
overall aerodynamic forces and moments acting on a model were
measured by a six-component force balance in a turbulent
boundary layer. The results indicate that the porosity
significantly reduces the wind loads. The design wind force
coefficients for porous canopy roofs can be provided by those
for solid roofs with the same configuration multiplied by a
reduction factor. The proposed wind force coefficients are
verified by a comparison of the load effect predicted by the
proposed wind force coefficients with the maximum load effect
obtained from dynamic analyses using the time history of wind
force and moment coefficients. The axial forces induced in the
columns supporting the roof are regarded as the load effect
for discussing the design wind loads.

Buckling of
Open-topped Oil Storage Tanks under Static Wind Loading

Engineering, Porto Alegre, Brazil, June 21-26, 2015.6
ABSTRACT: The present paper
investigates the buckling behavior of open-topped oil storage
tanks made of thin steel sheets and stiffening rings (wind
girders) under static wind loadings based on a finite element
analysis. The distributions of wind force coefficients Cf,
or wind pressure difference coefficients on two or three tank
models arranged in line are measured in a turbulent boundary
layer. Measurements are also made for isolated models for
comparison. The aspect ratio (height/diameter) H/D
of the model is changed from 1.0 to 0.25 and the radius to
thickness ratio R/t from 500 to 4000. The
non-dimensional gap spacing S/D between models
is changed from 0.125 to 1.0. The results on the mean wind
force coefficients Cf_mean are used for the buckling
analysis. First, the buckling behavior (i.e. buckling load and
mode) of open-topped tanks with rigid wind girders installed
at the top are investigated. Focus is on the effect of
circumferential Cf_mean distribution on the buckling
behavior. The results indicate that the distribution of
positive Cf_mean values in the windward area affects
the buckling load significantly. Then, the effects of the top
and intermediate wind girders on the buckling behavior of
ring-stiffened tanks are investigated. When the
non-dimensional flexural rigidity of wind girders is larger
than a critical value depending on H/D and R/t,
the buckling load is little affected by . In such a case the
buckling mode does not involve the deflection of wind girders.
An empirical formula is provided for predicting the buckling
loads of ring-stiffened open-topped oil storage tanks.

Engineering, Porto Alegre, Brazil, June 21-26, 2015.6
ABSTRACT: The strength of
elastically-supported glass plates subjected to wind load was
investigated by performing full-scale breakage tests and
numerical simulation that can predict glass failure pressure.
Full-scale breakage tests were carried out using window
specimens whose edges are supported as used in practice in
order to validate the applicability of numerical simulation
for the elastic support condition. The results indicate that
the numerical simulation can capture full-scale breakage test
results by adjusting parameters related to the material
characteristics and testing environments, especially relative
humidity, RH. In addition, current regulations for
evaluating the wind-resistance of glass plate in Japan, USA
and Australia were examined by comparing the results obtained
from the numerical simulation. As a result of comparison, it
is shown that the load resistance in Japan is likely to
overestimate the wind-resistance of glass plate and not to
capture the effect of window size and its aspect ratio
compared to those obtained from other countries’ code.

ABSTRACT: Taller pipe-framed greenhouses (pipe houses
hereafter) are required to maintain a buffer zone for an
improved thermal environment or to install devices for
controlling the thermal environment, such as movable curtains.
This study investigates the effect of ridge height on the
distributions of the wind pressure coefficient (Cp) on pipe
houses based on a wind tunnel experiment using 1:20 scale
models. The width and length of a standard pipe house in full
scale were 6 and 50 m, respectively, while the ridge height
was varied from 3.16 to 5.16 m. The results indicate that the
Cp distribution on the windward roof was strongly affected by
the ridge height when the wind direction was normal to the
ridge line. The windward roof was generally subjected to
negative wind pressure (suction). The suction had a maximum
value behind the windward eave, which increased in magnitude
with an increase in ridge height. This effect may be related
to the flow separation at the windward eave and reattachment
on the windward roof. As a result, the drag and lift
coefficients (CD and CL) obtained from the Cp distribution
were also affected by the ridge height. High suctions were
induced locally at the ridge corner of the leeward roof with
an oblique wind.

Abstract :
Design wind force coefficients are proposed on the basis of
wind tunnel experiment. Three different gable-end conditions
are tested; i.e. enclosed type, open type (without gable
walls) and partially enclosed type (with one gable wall). The
wind pressures are simultaneously measured at many points both
on the external and internal surfaces in a turbulent boundary
layer. First, the features of mean wind force distributions
are made clear. Then, the design wind force coefficients are
discussed, where focus is on the load effect induced by wind
loads. Based on the results obtained from a series of wind
tunnel experiment and structural analysis, we propose a
simplified model of the wind force coefficients for the main
wind force resisting systems by using the LRC method.

Abstract :
The
present study examines the wind-induced behaviour of
free-standing membrane canopy roofs with various types of
roof-supporting systems and presents wind force coefficients
for designing such roofs. The
effects of roof deformation and choice of roof-supporting
system on wind force coefficients are investigated. The
characteristics of wind-induced responses of the roofs are
taken into account for improving the wind force coefficients
that we previously proposed based on the results of wind
tunnel experiment with rigid roof models.

Abstract :
The present paper discusses the mechanism of the wind-induced
scattering of permeable unit flooring decks loosely laid on
the rooftops and balconies of high-rise buildings. Firstly,
the scattering mechanism of decks was investigated, based on a
blowing test using a blower and actual decks. Subsequently, a
simulation model was constructed for estimating the internal
pressures under the decks (pressures acting on the bottom
surface of decks) obtained from a wind tunnel experiment –
this is based upon the unsteady Bernoulli equation and the
time history of external pressures on the rooftop and
balconies. Combining the simulated internal pressures and the
experimentally obtained external pressures, the time history
of net wind pressures acting on the decks were computed.
Finally, the threshold wind speed of scattering (scattering
wind speed) was obtained by applying the scattering mechanism
to the simulated time history of the net wind pressures.

Relationship
between Surface Roughness and Turbulence of Natural Winds
near the Ground Surface

Abstract :
The design of low-rise buildings such that they
can handle wind loads makes it necessary to accurately
evaluate those wind loads, both on the structural framework
and on the cladding/components. To this end, it is necessary
to fully understand the characteristics of the wind near the
ground around a building. This study sets out to develop a
quantitative means of estimating the turbulence of the wind
near the surface of the ground, based on field measurements
obtained at different points across Japan. The surface
roughness is evaluated based on several factors taken from a
building information database. The relationship between these
factors and the turbulence of the wind is discussed. The
effect of the observation height, relative to the surface of
the ground, on the turbulence is also investigated.

Abstract : For the determination of wind
resistance of cladding materials, tests with specimens whose
size is relatively small and represents a part of the cladding
system, using simplified test setups (i.e., a partial
component test) tend to be performed due to their simplicity
and the technical testing capability of cladding
manufacturers. However, the differences between failure load
(pressure) of claddings obtained by such simplified methods
and that obtained under more realistic loading with specimens
fully representing actual cladding systems (i.e., a complete
component test) are not generally quantified. The present
study examines this difference in failure loads by performing
complete component tests and partial component tests using a
wall system employing composite siding with metal, and
discusses the parameters which influence failure loads.
