SUMMARY: The present paper investigates the buckling and vibration behavior of open-topped oil-storage tanks under wind loads based on a finite element analysis. Focus is on the effects of wind girders on such behavior. The wind force coefficients obtained in a turbulent boundary layer is used in the analysis. From the results of buckling analysis, the effects of top/intermediate wind girders on the buckling load and mode of tank shells are made clear. Furthermore, the effect of wind force distribution on the buckling load is discussed based on the results obtained from wind tunnel experiments with two or three tank models in in-line arrangement. A time-history analysis is also carried out in order to investigate the effect of the rigidity of wind girders on the vibration of tank shells. The stresses involved in the tank walls are found to be fairly small, provided that the wind girders are relatively rigid. Finally, the design recommendations of wind girders installed on an open-topped oil storage tanks are proposed, which provide more reasonable design criteria for the wind girders than the current guidelines.

SUMMARY: Wind loads on open-type framed membrane structures are investigated in two kinds of turbulent boundary layers. Focus is on the effect of wind turbulence on the wind loads. Three types of gable-end configurations, i.e. open, partially enclosed (semi open) and enclosed types, are tested. The structure consists of planner gable frames with clamped column bases. The bending moment at the column base is regarded as the most important load effect for discussing the design wind loads. The results indicate that the maximum load effect is induced in a frame near the windward gable wall in an oblique wind. The distribution of wind force coefficients providing the maximum load effect under such a condition is computed by using the LRC method. Based on the results, the design wind force coefficient for the main wind force resisting systems is proposed .

4.      Collapse process of pipe-framed greenhouses under snow loading

8th International Conference on Snow Engineering, Nantes, France, June 14-17, 2016, pp. 155-160

abstractThe present paper investigates the collapse process of pipe-framed greenhouses under snow loading based on a non-linear finite element anaysis, in which not only geometrical but also material non-linearity are taken into account. Both even and uneven distributions of snow load are considered. The non-linear behavior of the frame up to the collapse is numerically analysed. Buckling analysis of the frame is also carried out. The objective of the present paper is to establish more reasonable snow resistant design of pipe-framed greenhouses commonly used in the agricultural and horticultural industries in Japan. First, two-dimensional analysis is carried out with a basic model without reinforcement in order to understand the fundamental behavior of the frame up to the collapse, when a part of the frame touches the ground. Then, some measures of reinforcement to improve the snow resistance of the frame are discussed. The effect of reinforcement on the maximum load capacity is made clear. It is found that some types of reinforcement are not effective to the uneven load distribution, although they are effective to the even distribution. Finally, a three-dimensional analysis is carried out with a three dimensional frame model. The structure consists of arch pipes arranged in parallel and connected with each other by horizontal tie-beams (circular pipes). Discussion is made of the effect of three-dimensionality of the frame on the maximum load capacity.

Investigation on reproduction methods of downburst Flow field based on engineering approach

Yumi IIDA, Kiyotoshi OTSUKA, Yasushi UEMATSU

abstractDownbursts sometimes produce wind gusts strong enough to seriously damage to buildings and, occasionally, injure people. However, the downburst-induced wind loads on buildings are not considered explicitly in the building codes because of rather low probabilities of a specific building being hit by such localized extreme winds. Moreover, reasonable methods to reproduce downbursts in numerical and/or laboratory experiments for evaluating wind loads on buildings have not been established yet. In this study, LES simulations of isolated downbursts are performed. Four numerical methods for generating downbursts are investigated, where downbursts are treated as a non-buoyant impinging jet, an isothermal density current, a non-isothermal gravity flow and a moving impinging jet respectively. The differences of model-produced horizontal, vertical profiles and the wind speed distribution near the point where maximum velocity occurred are discussed.

The 14th International Symposium on Structural Engineering, October 12-15, 2016, Beijing, China

ABSTRACT: The present paper investigates the collapse process of pipe-framed greenhouses under static wind loading based on a non-linear finite element analysis. First, a two-dimensional analysis is performed to understand the fundamental properties of the collapse process considering the fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Iterative analyses of the structure’s response and the pressure distribution on the structure are carried out. That is, a series of structural analysis for computing the deformation of the structure under wind pressure and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis for computing the pressure distribution on the deformed structure is implemented. Although the problem is practically dynamic, the present paper focuses on the time-averaged deformation and wind pressure. The CFD model is verified by comparing the computed result with that of a wind tunnel experiment for the wind pressure distribution on a rigid model. In the structural analysis, both geometric and material non-linearities are considered. The results indicate that the FSI effect is relatively small up to the allowable stress or deformation. However, the effect becomes significant for larger deformations. The analysis, which considers the FSI effect, can predict a failure mode similar to that observed in damage investigations. Next, a discussion is made of the effect of reinforcement on the wind resistance. The wind velocities providing the allowable stress and deformation are obtained for various types of reinforcement. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional frames are investigated.

Proceedings of the 24th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp.13-18, 2016.12

ABSTRACT: It is very important for designing low-rise and middle-rise buildings to evaluate the design wind loads both on the main wind force resisting systems and cladding/components accurately. For this purpose, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural winds near the ground surface, which are influenced by surface roughness such as buildings and terrains. The objective of the present paper is to develop an evaluation method of wind turbulence near the ground surface by using a building information database. The relationship between the wind turbulence and surface roughness parameters is investigated based on the field measurements of wind speeds at many locations, the building information database, and the wind tunnel test.

Proceedings of the 24th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 79-84, 2016.12

ABSTRACT: The criterion for wind environment assessment by Wind Engineering Institute Co., Ltd. isbased on the relation between the mean wind speeds measured by 3 cup anemometers and the peripheral situation. This criterion has often been used for the assessments of wind environment around high-rise buildings. However, several decades have passed since this criterion was proposed. During these decades the urbanization of cities has progressed, resulting in a significant change in public opinion concerning the wind environment. In addition, ultrasonic anemometers with lower cost and higher performance has become popular and taken place of 3 cup anemometers; 3-cup anemometers respond to the wind speed change slowly for lower wind speeds while they tend to over-rotate for higher wind speeds due to the effect of acceleration. Furthermore, wind observation method has been changed following the specification of WMO. Considering these circumstances, we discuss a new criterion for the wind environment assessment. For this purpose, the present paper investigates the difference between 3 cup anemometer and ultrasonic anemometer for the measured values of wind speeds. Based on the results, we propose a correction method for converting the measured values by 3 cup anemometers to those by ultrasonic anemometers.

Wind load combinations for open-type framed membrane structures

Proceedings of the 24th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 217-222, 2016.12

ABSTRACT: Wind loads on open-type framed membrane structures are investigated in two kinds of turbulent boundary layers. Three types of gable-end configurations, that is, enclosed, open and partially enclosed types are tested. The wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points both on the external and internal surfaces. First, the critical conditions providing the maximum axial force for pinned-base frame and bending moment for clamped-base frame are detected for each flow. Then, the combination of external and internal pressures for evaluating the wind loads on the main wind force resisting systems is discussed by using three kinds of method focusing on the load effect. Furthermore, a discussion is made of the effect of gable-end configurations on the load effect induced by the external pressures on each structure. The result implies that the external pressure coefficients on enclosed type structure can be applied to the evaluation of wind loads on open-type structures.

Wind forces on permeable panels placed along the perimeter of the rooftop of a high-rise Building

Discussion of wind tunnel technique based on a comparison with Large Eddy Simulation

Tomoko AIHARA, Yasushi UEMATSU

Proceedings of the 24th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 229-234, 2016.12

ABSTRACT: The wind loads on permeable panels placed along the perimeter of the rooftop of a high-rise building were investigated in a wind tunnel in our previous paper. Because it was difficult to measure the back side pressures of the panel in the wind tunnel experiment, the rooftop pressures near the panel were used to evaluate the net wind forces on the panel. In this paper, such a simple assumption is validated by the results obtained from the CFD analysis using LES. The precision of the CFD analysis is discussed based on a comparison between CFD analysis and wind tunnel experiment for the wind pressure coefficients on the outer surface of the panel and the roof.

Buckling and vibration behavior of cylindrical storage tanks under wind loading

Proceedings of the 24th National Symposium on Wind Engineering, pp. 295-300, 2016.12

ABSTRACT: The present paper investigates the buckling and vibration behavior of cylindrical storage tanks based on wind tunnel experiments and FEM analysis. Focus is on the effect of the vibration of tank shells on the buckling behavior. The buckling loads obtained from the experiments are compared with those obtained from the FEM analysis for static wind loading. In the case of ring-stiffened tank models, the wind fluctuation affects the buckling behavior. The extent and duration of large wind forces affect the buckling behavior significantly. On the other hand, in the case of free-edge tank models, the buckling mechanism is quite simple. The buckling occurs when the wind load become larger than buckling load. Therefore, the effect of the wind fluctuation on the buckling behavior is quite small. Finally, based on the results obtained from the wind tunnel experiments, the effects of wind fluctuation on the buckling behavior were estimated using the gust effect factor.

ABSTRACT: With the spread of photovoltaic systems, a lot of wind-induced damage was done to these systems. Photovoltaic system installed on the roof of a building has a complex load path. Therefore, it is valid to evaluate the wind resistance based on the assembly test with such a specimen that consists of all members on the load path. This paper presents the result of an assembly test, in which wind loads are applied to the roof cladding and photovoltaic modules installed on a metal roof simultaneously. The results indicate that the specimen was destroyed at the roof fixing, where wind loads on the photovoltaic modules and the roof are concentrated.

Evaluation of the wind-resistance of rafter to pole plate connections in Japanese wooden residential houses

Daisuke KONNO, Sachiko YOSHIDA, Eri GAVANSKI, Yasushi UEMATSU

ABSTRACT: The effects of roof slope, loading speed, and aging of rafters to pole plate connections in timber structure on the wind-resistance were investigated by performing pulling-up load tests. In the first test, the connection of rafters to pole plate having different roof slope was tested in order to investigate the effect of roof slope and loading speed on strength of the connection. The results indicate that the roof slope and loading speed affects the failure behavior of specimens significantly. In the second test, the connection of rafters to pole plate obtained from an existing house was tested in order to investigate the effect of aged deterioration on the wind-resistance. From the results, it was found that the pulling-up strength of nail was increased by corrosion of nails if the failure mode is nail pull out.

Development of a new type of steel greenhouse with high wind-resistance utilizing the drag reduction by wing-like cross section

The Journal of the Society of Agricultural Structures, Vol.40, No.4 (Ser. No.151), pp.1-11, 2016.12

Abstract: The purpose of the present study is to develop a new type of steel greenhouse with wing-like cross section, which has high wind resistance despite a long span. The concept of the development is based on a fact that the characteristics of wind loads on a structure strongly depend on the structure’s shape.    First, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model suitable for the present study was established by comparing the CFD results with the experimental ones reported by Uematsu et al. (2004) for a steel greenhouse with wing-like cross section. Then, the effects of three parameters describing the wing-like cross section on the drag coefficient were investigated by a series of CFD analyses. Based on the results, together with a consideration for the workability inside the greenhouse, the most suitable cross section was proposed. Note that a two-dimensional model was used in this analysis. Finally, a wind tunnel experiment was carried out using a three-dimensional greenhouse model with the proposed cross section. The span and length of the model were assumed 20 m and 60 m, respectively. The experimental result on the wind pressure distribution was found to be in good agreement with the CFD result. Furthermore, the distribution of wind pressure coefficients on the model was investigated on the basis of the wind tunnel experiment.
